Well it’s not all over.

Posted by boidster on July 30, 2006

Some you may be pleased to know that despite my predictions of about a week ago, vagusnet.com is no longer going under and has now been taken up by new management. However, as for what the future holds now the place has been saved…………well I really don’t know anymore.

At the moment I’m not really that much involved in the running of the site, even though I remain an admin on the forum. But I don’t think I’ll be part of the future running, due to many factors going on outside of the site. Maybe it is just time to admit it’s time to move on. Whilst I don’t know who out of the team is going to be staying on, I would urge you to lend them your support in keeping the site alive. Ahead is a mammoth task and they’ll need it.

On a lighter note, hop over to ridiculousprime for an…..*ahem* odd look at the world. The world of minature mech anyway. Don’t ask any questions, especially ‘why?’! I know the guy, it’s better you never know. It made me laugh, so if anyone out there has a similar sense of humour to me (god help you, I really do feel for you!) then you’ll enjoy it.

That’s it for now, see ya soon!

Time for a change!

Posted by boidster on July 28, 2006

True to my word, I’m going to keep this thing updated, so here I am!

See what I did there?

No?

*sigh*

As the title says, I’m going to change how this works. Instead of just being a general bunch of text about whatever it is I can remember at the time of writing, I’m gonna try sticking things in little segments. Now it’s nothing ground breaking, but it might work. You lot will just have to tell me in the comments *hint hint*.

Like most of the country, the hot summer continues here at Boidster Acres (acres, as if I own fecking acres :P ), but why the hell does this country moan so god damn much about the weather. It’s too hot, too wet, too cold. Fuck sake people, it’s summer, this is how it’s supposed to be, enjoy it before it buggers off again and we’re left with grey skies for late autumn.

That feels better.

Speaking of summer, we’re going to be taking our summer holiday in 17 days time! Much w00tage! Not sure if Centre Parcs is ready for our collective behavious, but hey, they’ll learn. By we, I mean the notorious two otherwise known as father fil and paul, whom some of you may know, or at least know of, via a certain website, as well as repective families.

It’s also looking like we’ll be looking into a new collective project whilst away as well. Again, not much I can say at this stage, but the ideas factory is open for business, and hopefully it’s going to be something special. I’d love to get on with it now and get things going but certain factors have to be agreed and settled first. Gotta love the creative process!

What am I playing at the moment?

This week, and most of the past couple of weeks before that, I’ve been really into Far Cry Predator on the 360. I know it’s been out a while but I got stuck for a new game as nothing was jumping out at me, so thought I’d plump for this one. Intially I must say I wasn’t overtly impressed, with the possibility of a trade in happening in a few days. Yet this is one of those titles that sucks you in the more you play it. Ok, so it is another shooter, but does offer different ways to get through situations instead of just shoot, move, shoot again, kill boss. Plenty of variety in the scenarios helps too with a good mix of interior and exterior locations, some you just want to stop and admire. If it weren’t for the goons shooting at me I would have done for a while longer, but there were bio-chemist goons to kill.

Aside from that I’ve been getting into the DS and PSP again this month. On Ninty’s handheld, my last purchase was Trauma Centre: Under the Knife. If you don’t know it, you play a surgeon in training, performing operations, before being sucked into a viral epidemic which you must help stop. This one is all played with the stylus as you actually perform all operations with it, having guidance from your assistant and usually some medical big-wig as you perform each operation. Things get progressively more difficult, with each stage being timed and the fact that the patients heart rate (health in this case) is constantly failing. As it is split in stages it’s easy to pick and play in short burst, essential for a handheld game in my opinion and offers a decent level of satisfaction when you complete a stage. Although it does have teh odd one that is REALLY frustrating, like the one I’m stuck on now. To explain it would take to long, adn you probably wouldn’y have a clue what I’m on about unless you’d played the game. However, it is well worth the money.

On the PSP, I was hoping to be playing Syphon Filter, but the publishers have pushed the bloody thing back. AGAIN! Why, I do not know. America has it now, so what’s the problem. Does America now suddenly speak a totally different language to us? Is there content they have that we shouldn’t see, or vice versa? Whatever the reason it pissed me off enough to cancel teh preorder I had for the past couple of months. No great loss to them I know, but it’s still annoying.

In future posts, I’ll try and bring a little bit of gaming news that caught my eye that may not have made the mainstream for you people. Strange what you find out when you look enough.

What have I been listening to?

I’ve mainly been going back to older stuff in my collection. One song I seem to have on repeat alot right now is ‘Two Hands of a Prayer’, by Ben Harper (clicky for link to the website). I found it in my iTunes listing whilst it was on shuffle play, and I totally forgot how beautiful it was. There are loads more, but if I listed them, you’d be bored shitless after a bit, so I’ll leave it at one track for now.

In fact, I’ll call it a day for this post I think, because you probably are bored shitless.

I’ll look to update again by next weekend for more pointless ramblings. As long as someone finds it interesting/funny/passes some time for you/found this on the way to google/got the wrong page/etc. etc.

Nearly 3 months later!

Posted by boidster on July 23, 2006

I finally get around to making another post!

Things have been somewhat busy shall we say. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

Since last time, I’ve been hard at work trying to get Vagusnet.com back up to scratch. Having lost a lot of visitors since the turn of 2006 it’s been somewhat of an uphill struggle; one which at the moment looks like it may be coming to an end. As of the 26th July (this Wednesday as I type) VN is due to be closing it’s doors. I do know that discussions are being held to keep the site open, in what capacity I am unsure, but I personally will no longer be part of the contributing team due to reasons I’ll explain in a moment. What I do know is that the past couple of weeks has seen some very tough decisions being made, none more so than for Vagus himself who started the place off some two and a half years ago. If any of you reading this are regular visitors of VN I would suggest you keep your browsers pointing to it as the future is not set in stone yet.

I would also like to take this chance to publicly thank all of you who have left messages of support on the VN boards since the above was announced. It has been very heart-warming to see that the site has some strong support, and we couldn’t have done anything without that over the past two years.

One question I have been asked quite a bit is will there be anything after VN, new projects for example. Whilst I don’t want to preempt anything that may not happen, I am currently involved in some very exciting discussions about possibilities to do something that myself and a couple of colleagues really enjoyed. Sorry to dangle the proverbial carrot, but this may never take off and I don’t fancy ending up with egg on my face. Again :p

As I said, there are various reasons for me leaving VN at this time. The main one however is that a month or so ago I signed up for a new home-study course to try and change out of the shit job I’m in right now and change career totally. Well, that should be ‘get’ a career, as I wouldn’t say I have one right now, just a job I fell into for lack of anything better to go for. It’s just taken me ages to get my finger out my ass and do something about making my working life better. Sometimes I think procrastination should be my middle name!

As it’s a home study course, naturally that means my spare time is cut down quite a bit (by choice) so being able to keep a site like VN up to date and complete this course isn’t going to be possible. So one had to give, and seeing as the course is costing me around the £2500 mark, you get why I had to drop from VN. It’s just sad that recent events coincided with this decision. (Gaz, thanks for the understanding matey!)

Outside of work and websites, the past two weekends have probably been the most stressed out for a while. Last weekend, one of our cats decided to go missing on the Saturday morning and wasn’t found (in a neighbours garage) until the Monday morning. The only reason he was found was due to my wife taking one last look around the neighbourhood just in case. Next thing she knows, she hears Spike’s very familiar call, and trust me when I say you couldn’t mistake it! Despite the worry, he turned out ok, just hungry and thirsty thankfully, but he would pick two of the hottest days of the year round here to get stuck in a hot garage! Then to top it off, Suki, our other cat disappeared on Friday night.

It’s stuff like this that makes me wonder if there is somebody somewhere trying to make us suffer for past indignations!

This time however, she hadn’t been stuck anywhere, or caught, not even lost looking at how she made her grand entrance into our living room almost exactly 24 hours after she first disappeared. I have a feeling she’s a bit of an adventure cat so will do this again, but at least we’ll know to expect it. Suppose we asked for it really, taking on a previously feral cat. Ah well, live and learn!

What else?

Oh yeah, some of you chaps may want to check out a new blog site from a good friend of mine. I’ll let you lot take a look and decide for yourself, but just remember this place has only very recently begun so give him time to get more content, but he’s not afraid of his opinions so I’d recommend you check it out! (Invoice for the plug is in the post ;) )

Right, I’m off to enjoy my Sunday! I’ll catch you all soon!
